Chronic Pain Awareness Month

Dr. Sanjay Gupta on Chronic Pain

Dr. Sanjay Gupta's recent Fresh Air interview explored his new book "It Doesn't Have to Hurt," revealing that pain is created by the brain—which can be both the problem and the solution. Among the most surprising findings: recent research shows people with lower inflammation after injury are more likely to develop chronic pain, challenging the conventional wisdom of immediately taking anti-inflammatories. Gupta also noted that cannabis only provides significant pain relief for about one-third of people, despite widespread beliefs about its effectiveness.

Chronic pain is the fastest growing condition in the US, faster than cancer, diabetes and dementia. - Dr. Sanjay Gupta
Drawing from his own experience of being impaled on a fence at age 12(which led to euphoria from his body's natural endorphin response), Gupta emphasized that understanding the brain's role in pain opens doors to retraining it through techniques like meditation, which can reduce pain scores to zero during practice—offering hope for the 20% of the population living with chronic pain.

Save the Date: “A Prescription for Change” at White Oak Books in Vancouver, WA on September 18

On Thursday evening, September 18th, from 6-8 pm, we invite you to join us for a discussion where we will hear from McKenna Marvin, one of our artists, and Dr. Ron Turker, MD, a Fellow with the Patient Revolution. Entry fee includes a free sketchbook and pen to encourage the artist in you!

We will discuss the challenges of our current healthcare system and how making art can support your well-being.

Ron Turker started in the ’80s as a standup comic and, through a series of nonlinear events, became a pediatric surgeon and chronic pain clinician. Thirty years of caring for kids shaped, sharpened, and ground his sensibilities into a resolute yet witty voice for healthcare change and equity. He is also the author of a satirical novel, The Wandering Jew of St. Salacious.

McKenna Marvin is a painter and illustrator based in Portland, Oregon, working primarily in watercolor, pencil, and graphite. After studying physics and astronomy in California, she moved to Tokyo to pursue art at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art, where she earned her BA. Following seven years in Japan and a long creative hiatus, she returned to the U.S. and rekindled her practice in the Pacific Northwest.  Inspired by shoujou manga from Japan, surrealist painters in Eastern Europe, and ancient, historical events, McKenna’s paintings consist of chromatic, dreamlike beings, and seemingly angelic motifs drenched in sunset, twilight worlds.

The Chronic Pain Project has been a breath of fresh air in my life, it has given me opportunities to expand the reach of my voice. As a mostly homebound artist, it has provided a safe place to come together and connect with other artists who are living a similar experience.  There is something really special about having that instant understanding and connection with others creating through pain and hardship."

"Well, making art is my number one pain management strategy. When I am making art, I There's this quote by Thomas Burton that says 'art is the place where you lose yourself and find yourself at the same time.' And I just, I just love that, because I do lose myself in the process, process of creating. I um, and I have to make art every day for my mental health, just so I can deal with this ... disease.”
